Reuters reports that the clerical body tasked with selecting Iran’s next Supreme Leader is close to reaching an agreement. The new leader will succeed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in recent US-Israeli strikes.
Citing the Mehr News Agency, Reuters noted that the update came from Ayatollah Mohammadmehdi Mirbaqeri, a member of the Assembly of Experts, on Sunday. While progress has been made, the agency quoted him stating that "some obstacles" still need to be resolved. On Saturday, a senior cleric within the Assembly indicated that members would meet "within one day" to finalize the selection.
A Non-Traditional Selection Process Iranian media reports suggest a minor disagreement within the group regarding the final announcement. The debate centers on whether the decision requires a formal physical meeting or if it can be announced without traditional formalities. Ayatollah Mohsen Heidari Alekasir, another member of the Assembly of Experts, stated in a video published by Nournews that a physical meeting for a final vote is currently impossible given the prevailing circumstances.
He revealed that a candidate has already been selected based on the late leader's advice to choose someone whom the "enemy hates" rather than someone they praise. "Even the ‘Great Satan’ (the U.S.) has mentioned his name," Alekasir remarked regarding the chosen successor. This comes days after U.S. President Donald Trump described Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, as an "unacceptable" choice.
Israel Issues Stern Warning Meanwhile, the Israeli military has issued a direct warning to Iran, vowing to pursue any successor to Ayatollah Khamenei.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the IDF’s Farsi-language account addressed the Assembly of Experts: "The Assembly of Experts, which has not convened for decades, will soon gather in the city of Qom. We want to inform you that the hand of the State of Israel will continue to pursue every successor and every person seeking to appoint one.
We warn all those intending to participate in the selection meeting: we will not hesitate to target you. This is a warning!" Trump Criticizes UK’s Starmer Over Involvement In a separate development, U.S. President Donald Trump has criticized the UK government, accusing Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer of trying to "join a war after we’ve already won." In a social media post, Trump claimed the UK was "giving serious thought" to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East, only for the U.S. to inform them they were not needed.
Downing Street has yet to respond to these claims. However, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed that one of the UK’s two carriers is currently on "advanced readiness." Trump’s comments follow the arrival of U.S. bomber jets in the UK as the U.S. begins using British bases for "specific defensive operations." "The United Kingdom... finally gave serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers... That’s OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them anymore—but we will remember," Trump wrote on Truth Social. Speaking later on Air Force One, he added, "It’s not the right time. It would have made sense if we had them two weeks ago."
The UK’s Stance The UK government maintains that it has no interest in joining a wider offensive campaign in the Middle East. While Sir Keir Starmer did not address Trump directly, he wrote in the Sunday Mirror that "at moments like this, the country needs seriousness, not political games." "While opposition parties seek to undermine Britain on the world stage, my Labour government is focused on protecting British people at home and abroad," Starmer stated.
